Dracula terborchii C.A. Luer, A.Hirtz 1999

Dracula terborchii was found in the northwest of Ecuador, north of the town of Chical. This town is located northwest of the town of Maldonado, near the border with Colombia.
Pepe Portillio gave me the plant in 1996, and after growing for a year in my greenhouse it flowered for the first time in spring 1997. In 1998 I’ve sent a flower to mr. Carlyle A. Luer in Sarasota, FL, U.S.A.
He described the plant in early 1999, and it was named in honor of the person who flowered it first in culture.
Two different forms of this plant are known, a dark form and a much lighter form as shown on the picture below.

Masdevallia terborchii C.A. Luer 2000

Masdevallia terborchii was first found by Silvano, an employee of one of Manuel Arias companies in Lima, Peru. In 2000, on a trip to Peru together with Martine and Patrick Cloes from Hasselt, Belgium, I bought this plant as an unnamed species from Ayachucho in the nursery of Manuel Arias. When we returned to The Netherlands the plant started to flower right away. Because mr. Carlyle A. Luer was visiting Martine and Patrick I took the plant to their place. After this visit mr. Carlyle A. Luer described the plant.
